Course Curriculum

The Diploma of Laws requires the successful completion of 80 credit points, designed to provide students with a balanced mix of core knowledge and elective specialization. All units carry a value of 10 credit points unless otherwise indicated. The course structure consists of one compulsory core unit and seven specialist elective units. The core unit, LWZ115 Legal Process, serves as a foundational subject and is a prerequisite for most higher-level law units. It introduces students to the principles of legal reasoning, legal institutions, and the processes of lawmaking and interpretation, offering an essential grounding for further legal studies. Students who have completed a similar unit elsewhere may seek recognition of prior learning or credit transfer.In addition to the core unit, students must complete 70 credit points from a range of specialist electives designed to enhance understanding across various legal and contextual disciplines. Electives include areas such as Indigenous Peoples and the Legal System, Criminal Law, Torts, Contracts, Property Law,Environmental and Planning Law, and Human Rights Law. The course also allows flexibility for students to select additional law units from the Bachelor of Laws program with the approval of the Course Coordinator, providing an opportunity to tailor studies according to academic or professional interests.The program rules align with the Higher Education Course Rules (Award Requirements) under the Units and Courses Policy. Transitional arrangements have been made to accommodate course updates over time, ensuring that previously completed or equivalent units continue to count toward course completion. Students are encouraged to complete LWZ115 early in their studies to facilitate progression into advanced law subjects. Overall, this structure equips students with a strong foundation in legal studies, enabling them to pursue further qualifications such as the Bachelor of Laws or to apply their legal knowledge in diverse professional contexts.
