Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Software Engineering Honours program emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and its practical application through projects and hands-on exercises. Students develop a deep understanding of software engineering principles while gaining the technical and professional skills needed to thrive in the digital technology sector. The course requires the successful completion of 320 credit points, which include common units, core units, research units, and one elective. Common units help students build communication and cultural capability skills through subjects such as Cultural Capabilities and either Design and Innovation or Language, Literacy and Sustainability. The 250 credit points of core units cover a comprehensive range of topics including data science, computing fundamentals, database design, algorithms, mobile and web development, cybersecurity, network engineering, software systems, and human-computer interaction. The program also incorporates project management and advanced studies in machine learning and artificial intelligence. A key component of the course is the Honours research project, completed through two sequential thesis units, where students conduct independent research under supervision. Students also have the opportunity to take one specialist elective to complement their area of interest.The program has been updated over time to ensure alignment with technological advancements and industry standards. In 2026, several unit codes and titles were revised to reflect evolving course content, such as updates to digital systems, C programming, and machine learning units. In 2025, the single honours thesis unit was replaced by two new thesis components to provide a more structured research experience. Transition arrangements are in place to ensure that continuing students are not disadvantaged by these updates, with equivalent unit recognition applied where appropriate. Through this program, graduates are equipped with the critical thinking, technical expertise, and research experience required to excel as software engineers, developers, and technology innovators in a rapidly evolving global industry.
