Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Nursing is a comprehensive program designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and professional experience required to become competent and confident registered nurses. The course is structured around 23 core units totaling 144 credits, all of which must be completed in a set sequence to ensure steady academic progress and timely completion of the program. Throughout the degree, students engage in a balanced combination of theoretical learning, practical training, and professional experience placements, providing a strong foundation for contemporary nursing practice in diverse healthcare environments. Key units focus on developing essential skills such as effective communication in healthcare settings, evidence-based practice, and person-centred care, while foundational scientific knowledge is built through units in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and pathophysiology. Clinical reasoning and problem-solving are further advanced through specialized units that cover acute alterations in health, mental health and wellbeing, chronic health, community care, complex patient care, and leadership and management in nursing.A significant component of the course involves residential schools and professional practice placements, which provide hands-on learning experiences and the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world clinical environments. These placements, spread across several professional nursing practice units, help students gain exposure to different areas of healthcare and develop the adaptability needed to work with patients from diverse backgrounds. In addition, the course emphasizes cultural awareness through dedicated study of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ health, preparing graduates to provide respectful and inclusive care. Legal and ethical considerations in nursing are also thoroughly explored to ensure graduates are ready to practice safely and responsibly.
