Course Curriculum

Commencing ACU Term 1, the Master of Social Work is structured over two years with a combination of specified coursework units and practice education units. In the first term, students study Social Work Theories, Context and Fields of Practice, and Social Work, Mental Health and Wellbeing. These units provide foundational knowledge on social work principles, mental health, and wellbeing, delivered through campus attendance and multimode formats.In Term 2, students complete Social Work with Individuals and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and Social Work, focusing on working with diverse populations and understanding culturally responsive practices. Term 3 introduces Field Practicum 1, a 30-credit unit completed over two terms, alongside Social Work with Children, Youth and Family offered online. This practicum provides hands-on experience under supervision, allowing students to apply theory to real-world practice.Term 4 continues Field Practicum 1, ensuring students consolidate practical skills. In the second year, Term 1 covers Social Work Research and Social Policy, Contemporary Issues and Social Work, equipping students with research competencies and insight into policy frameworks affecting practice. Term 2 includes Social Work with Groups and Social Work with Communities, preparing students to work effectively with larger groups and community initiatives.Term 3 of Year 2 features Field Practicum 2, another 30-credit unit spanning two terms, alongside Integration of Theory, Evidence and Ethics for Effective Practice. This combination ensures students synthesize their knowledge, ethical frameworks, and evidence-based practice approaches. Term 4 concludes Field Practicum 2, allowing students to demonstrate professional readiness and apply comprehensive social work skills across diverse practice settings.
