Course Curriculum

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is a two-year full-time research degree, or part-time equivalent, designed to provide students with advanced training in independent scholarly inquiry across a wide range of disciplines offered by the university, including theology and philosophy, nursing and midwifery, education, business, and the arts and sciences. The program focuses on developing research skills, critical thinking, and the ability to undertake systematic investigation that contributes original knowledge or understanding to a chosen field. Students are guided through the process of formulating research questions, conducting literature reviews, selecting appropriate methodologies, collecting and analysing data, and presenting findings in a coherent, rigorous, and academically sound manner. The culmination of the degree is the submission of a written thesis, which serves as the primary form of assessment and demonstrates the candidate’s ability to conduct independent research at a high level of scholarly competence. Throughout the course, students are encouraged to engage deeply with existing research, identify gaps in knowledge, and apply innovative approaches to address complex questions within their discipline. The MPhil provides opportunities to develop specialised expertise, enhance professional skills, and prepare for further academic or research-focused careers, including progression to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) if desired. Graduates of the program acquire the capacity to think critically and independently, communicate complex ideas effectively, and contribute meaningfully to academic, professional, and societal contexts. By combining structured research training with a substantial thesis project, the MPhil equips students with both the theoretical understanding and practical research experience necessary to succeed in advanced scholarly work and to make significant contributions to knowledge and practice in their chosen field.
