The Bachelor of Visual Arts and Design provides students with a structured yet flexible study path through a combination of visual arts units, a graphic design minor, arts electives, professional practice, and core curriculum subjects. In Part A, students complete 120 credit points across a wide range of visual arts disciplines, including drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, video and installation, as well as art history and theory units that explore periods from the Renaissance to the twenty-first century. These units also include opportunities for self-directed studio work and international study tours, such as the Venice Biennale. Part B requires students to complete a 40-credit-point graphic design minor, allowing them to develop essential design skills that complement their studio practice. Part C broadens students’ knowledge base with 40 credit points selected from Bachelor of Arts minors such as archaeology, communication, drama, economics, history, psychology, sociology, theology, youth work, and more, giving them the opportunity to explore interdisciplinary interests and develop a wider understanding of cultural and social contexts. Students may also take additional minors depending on prerequisites and availability. Part D focuses on professional development through units in professional practice and internships, enabling students to gain real-world experience and industry insight while applying their creative skills in workplace settings. Finally, Part E consists of 20 credit points from the core curriculum, offering units that explore themes such as being human, ethics, practical reasoning, justice, Indigenous spiritualities, ecology, and the connections between art and meaning. Together, these components create a comprehensive program that develops technical expertise, creative thinking, cultural understanding, and professional readiness, preparing graduates for diverse pathways in the visual arts and creative industries.
