The Bachelor of Speech Pathology program is structured to provide students with a comprehensive blend of inter-professional learning, discipline-specific theory, practical experience, and a liberal arts foundation. Part A, the Inter-professional Units, requires students to complete 40 credit points in foundational subjects such as Psychology for Allied Health, Indigenous Health and Culture, Neuroscience for Allied Health, and Research and Evidence-Informed Practice. These units develop students’ understanding of human behaviour, neurological function, and culturally responsive care, providing the essential knowledge to support collaborative practice in healthcare settings. Part B, Speech Pathology Theory Units, consists of 170 credit points covering core disciplinary knowledge across communication, anatomy and physiology, linguistics, phonetics, language and speech disorders, motor speech disorders, voice and fluency disorders, swallowing and feeding, and literacy and cognition across the lifespan. Additional units focus on public health, community development, technology in practice, and professional reasoning, ensuring graduates are equipped to provide evidence-based, culturally sensitive, and person-centred care. Part C, Speech Pathology Integration and Practice Units, encompasses 90 credit points of progressive clinical and professional practice, including introductory and advanced practice placements and reflective professional practice units, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts while developing clinical reasoning, ethical decision-making, and professional competence. Finally, Part D, Core Curriculum Units, requires 20 credit points from a selection of units exploring human experience, ethics, society, spirituality, arts, and justice, fostering critical thinking and reflective practice. Overall, the program’s carefully sequenced structure integrates biomedical sciences, speech pathology theory, professional practice, and liberal studies, providing students with the skills, knowledge, and ethical foundation needed to become competent, adaptable, and reflective speech pathologists ready to support communication and swallowing outcomes across diverse populations and communities.
