Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (Birth to Five Years) provides a structured and comprehensive learning pathway over four years, guiding students through foundational early childhood concepts, education studies, curriculum knowledge and professional experience. In the first year, students focus on early childhood development and wellbeing through units that explore infant and toddler studies, social and emotional learning, and the creation of effective learning environments, alongside introductory education studies and play-based learning. As they progress into the second year, learners build deeper understanding in teaching and learning theories, early literacy, science and sustainability, and technologies for young children, while also completing their first 20-day professional placement. The degree continues in the third year with units that strengthen knowledge of social justice, community engagement, Indigenous perspectives and creative arts in early childhood, as well as another professional placement focusing on curriculum planning and inclusive education. In the final year, students undertake advanced studies in behaviour guidance, English and mathematics curriculum, leadership and advocacy in early childhood contexts, and build strong professional identities through additional placements, including experience with infants and toddlers and a final 20-day teaching round. Across all semesters, the course incorporates core curriculum requirements and a strong emphasis on diversity, family partnerships, assessment and professional practice, ensuring graduates are fully prepared for meaningful and responsive work in early childhood education settings.
