Course Curriculum

This three-year program is structured to develop a strong foundation and advanced expertise in data science, analytics, and business information systems, combining specified business units, a specialised data-focused stream, core curriculum units, community engagement, and electives. In Year 1 Semester 1, students begin with four key units: Data and Information Management, Information Technology in Action, Money Matters, and Managing People and Organisations. These subjects introduce essential concepts in data handling, business fundamentals, and organisational behaviour. In Semester 2, students continue with Managing Markets, Python Fundamentals for Data Science, Business Data Analysis, and their first core curriculum unit, which encourages reflection on social and ethical responsibilities.In Year 2 Semester 1, the focus shifts more clearly to data science. Students take Introduction to Data Science and Machine Learning, Introduction to Cyber Security, and Data Management and Visualisation. These units cover modern analytical tools, data security principles, and visual storytelling with data. A general elective in this semester offers flexibility for students to pursue personal interests or complementary skills. In Semester 2, students explore Business Requirement Analysis and engage with the community through BIPX202, which enhances interpersonal and problem-solving skills in real-world settings. Two additional general electives offer further customisation of the learning path.Year 3 builds on these foundations with more advanced and applied units. In the first semester, students complete AI-Powered Augmented Analytics, Mining Web and Social Media Data, and Applied Data Mining. These units provide hands-on experience with real datasets and contemporary tools. The second core curriculum unit is also completed here, promoting critical thinking about justice and societal change. In the final semester, students study Big Data Analytics and Managing Data Analytics Projects, concluding with a professional experience unit and a final elective. This structure ensures graduates are well-prepared for data-driven roles across industries, combining technical skills with ethical insight and workplace experience.
