The Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours) at ACU is a one-year, full-time program designed for students who have already completed an undergraduate degree in biomedical science or a related field. This honours degree provides an opportunity to extend knowledge gained in previous studies and develop advanced research skills that are essential for careers in scientific research or further postgraduate study. The program combines coursework with an intensive research thesis, allowing students to gain expertise in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication. The course commences with two online scheduled units in ACU Term 1: Research Methods in Biomedical and Health Sciences Research and Statistics for Biomedical and Health Sciences Research. These units equip students with the foundational skills needed to plan, conduct, and analyse scientific research effectively. In Term 2, students undertake Communicating Research in Biomedical and Health Sciences, which focuses on scientific writing, presentation, and dissemination of research findings. Concurrently, students begin their honours thesis with SCIE403 Honours Thesis A, a multi-mode unit that introduces the research project under the guidance of an academic supervisor. The thesis continues across ACU Terms 3 and 4 with SCIE404 Honours Thesis B, a 40-credit-point unit completed over two terms. During this time, students conduct original research, analyse results, and prepare a substantial written thesis demonstrating their capacity for independent scientific inquiry. Supervision and mentorship from experienced academic staff ensure that students can explore a particular area of interest in depth, while developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and scholarly communication skills.By the end of the program, graduates will have produced an honours thesis that showcases their research expertise and ability to contribute new knowledge to the biomedical sciences. While this degree does not confer professional registration, it provides a strong foundation for further study at the postgraduate level and prepares students for research-focused careers in health, medical, and scientific sectors.
